Arrrr: It’s Talk Like a Pirate Day!

Today on OOM we’re having so much fun celebrating International Talk Like a Pirate Day! We’re practicing our impressions by reading some great books from Scholastic featuring swashbuckling, buccaneering pirates.

Pirasaurs! (Ages 3–5) by Josh Funk, illustrated by Michael H. Slack: Meet the Pirasaurs, a ragtag team of seasoned pirate dinosaurs looking for adventure and treasure! There’s fearsome Captain Rex, golden-toothed Velocimate, one-eyed Bronto Beard, and more fearsome, buccaneering beasts....as well as one new recruit who may be small, but who’s eager to prove he can learn the ropes and find his place on the team. But when a trap is set upon the Pirasaurs while looking for buried treasure, it’s up to the littlest recruit to show the team that there's more to a Pirasaur than meets the eye patch!

The Pirate Jamboree (Ages 3–5) by Mark Teague: Young readers and their parents can join Eye-Patch Sue, the Johnson Brothers, and the rest of the scurvy rascals as their imaginations take them from their neighborhood play out to the high-seas. But the brood of pirates will have to watch out for the dreaded S.S. Clean Your Room captained by none other than Mrs. Jones! But as the sky turns gold, dinner will lie ahead, and these scoundrels will have to head in to a quieter port, dinner, and dreams of their wild deeds and tomorrow’s Pirate Jamboree ahead.

Haggis and Tank: All Paws on Deck (Ages 5–7) by Jessica Young, illustrated by James Burks: Tank is a clumsy, outgoing Great Dane. Haggis is a dapper and grumpy Scottie dog. In the first book in the series, Haggis and Tank set sail as pirates. At first, Haggis doesn't see what Tank does—that an adventure awaits them with just a little imagination! But soon, Haggis joins in the fun and the two friends go on a pirate adventure. They talk like pirates, swab the deck, and even search for buried treasure. This series is full of clever wordplay and homophones that make Haggis and Tank's adventures even more fun!

The Watchmen of Port Fayt (Ages 8–12) by Conrad Mason: A rip-roaring adventure full of pirates, magical creatures, and unlikely heroes! Captain Newton and his men have always protected Port Fayt—a place where humans live in peace alongside trolls, elves, and fairies. But now Fayt is under threat from a much more powerful enemy--the League of Light, a group out to destroy all non-humans. The first exciting book in the epic Tales of Fayt trilogy.
