Cecil’s Pride: The Life of a Lion King

In the spirit of Earth Day, we're excited to share Cecil’s Pride: The True Story of a Lion King, a stunning new picture book about the famed lion’s life and death.

Authors Craig Hatkoff, Juliana Hatkoff, and Isabella Hatkoff tell the story of Cecil's rise to power in the wild and how, after his death, he became a global symbol for all endangered animals. Stunning photographs by Oxford University wildlife researcher and expert Brent Stapelkamp accompany the story.

The book marks the latest installment in the Hatkoffs' Turtle Pond Collection, a series of nonfiction picture books about animals in the wild overcoming adversity.

Cecil’s Pride officially hits stores on Tuesday, April 26th!

Craig and Isabella recently joined us on the Scholastic Reads podcast to talk about their book. We learned a lot from the two of them: how Cecil's Pride came about, what makes lions so unique, what kids can learn from stories of animals' resilience, and how many pets the Hatkoffs have had through the years—a lot! You can listen to the full episode here

We're also celebrating the book with this beautiful GIF, which brings together a photograph of the majestic lion and an illustration done by Isabella. Enjoy!
