Prevent summer "brain drain": 5 tips for parents

Make reading a top priority for your child, even during the dog days of summer! Scholastic’s Maggie McGuire has 5 easy tips for parents. Find more at scholastic.com/summer.

#1: Find a reading buddy. Let kids take charge of story time and have them read aloud to their furry friends – whether it be the family pet or their favorite stuffed animal.

#2: Go local! Have you run out of great book ideas? Well, you’re not alone.  Parents always need help finding new books for their kids. Utilize local resources for great books – poll parents at the next pool party or the local parent Facebook group or ask your town librarian great summer reads.

#3: Set a weekly minutes goal! Set weekly goals and share your #MondayMinutesGoals with friends and family so they can join in on the fun and encourage your kid to keep on reading.

#4: Set aside family “book” time. Savor these last days of summer by blocking time to read a great book together. Grab a flashlight and read spooky stories in your backyard or bring books to the beach, and always be sure to bring a bundle of great reads for the long car ride during your next family vacation.

#5: Read all about it! Remember, everything counts as reading – whether it be a sports newspaper article, a comic book or even a video game instruction booklet.
